Three Japanese orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Sakae Tanaka and Dr. Takehiro Matsubara, in Tokyo, and Dr. Ikufumi Yamada, in Kyoto, recognized that surgical outcomes from conventional Short Femoral Nail (SFN) implants were poor.

In 2016, they decided to improve the 30 year old design of the SFN. The result was the Best Fit Nail (BFN). After three years of development, the inventors introduced the BFN into surgical practice in Japan from 2019.

BFN Research was established to develop and protect their invention and to promote its use.
